Hey guys,

I'm thinking about placing a performance chip in my car, but I do not really know too much about them. I was able to find this on the internet http://www.performancechipsdirect.com/BMW/5-Series/ it claims about 50 HP; does anyone know about this product? Is it just for 535's ??? The install instructions seem pretty easy. Also, I've noticed a lot of members have chips and wonder how they worked out for you and which one you purchased. Can you really feel the power increase? Do you remove them before service, etc. I'm sure there are a lot of FAKE\worthless products which I want to avoid. Any help would be great.

"Performance Chips" is an old terminology. These days, most tuners do software remaps where they go into your ECU and upload their performance software. Most are supposed to be undetectable by the dealers and you can't just simply remove it and put it back.

Also, there's no way you can get 50hp from a "chip" or remap on the normally aspirated BMWs as most of them are already pretty optimized from the factory. It's more realistic to get between 10-20hp but the other benefits include better throttle response, raised rev limiter and top speed limiter removal. The turbo cars like the 535 on the other hand, is a different story. You can get a huge bump in power on those engines through remaps or piggy back units that plug inline of the ECU. Those piggy back units can be removed/reinstalled.

There are a lot of companies that offer remaps and Powerchips seems to be one of the top ones showing more power gains. You can also get performance software from companies like Dinan, RDSport, Gintani, Singh Autosport, Superchips, Speed Innovations..etc....

Thanks, I guess I'll have to find a place to get it done down here in South Florida.

pretty good mod list so far, thought or heard the RPI exhaust on our 550's. Sounds sweet. Just got my scoop haven't installed it yet, you notice any gains?
