Seriously, I love what the OP has done to his 124s. He did quality work and transformed his wheels from run of the mill 124s to something unique and, to me anyway, special.

My Ride: 2012 535i xdrive M-Sport Dark Graphite II 2004 545i Black Sapphire Metallic-Retired 2001 525i Titanium Silver Metallic-Retired1994 325ic Convertible Boston Green-Retired 1985 325es Dolphin Grey-Retired
This is the Duplicolor products I used... Primer,black,clearcoat
I used 350 grit sandpaper and sanded the rims, washed with soap and water wiped it down dry then masked the rim....
I sprayed about 5 to 6 coats of primer, then the black and finished off with clearcoat....
I used this halogen light I bought from Home depot for like $6.00 It's 500watts and put out a lot of heat so after each process I put the light close to the rim and let it bake for like 30min. The rims were very warm to touch. Rinse and repeat for each rim. 
After 2 days and many hours here is the finished product....
I'm going to let them sit for a day or two then I will mount the on the car...stay tuned

If I had the time I would.
I figure if I went the powder coating route it would of cost me about $400-$500. Total cost to me was a only $60.00 and a little elbow grease!!!!

but spray paint is never as tough as two-stage paints or powder coat.
You are right on that but for winter rims I would say it was money well spent.
