Specialists, Masters, Experts and fellow forum members - I am headed to install the Orion V2 on my 2006 - 530i.

I would want to know the best practices known\followed by you.

1. The Tools employed
2. The Glue
3. Any things to watch out for
4. Any tips
5. Any tricks

While its getting Cold out here I get more and more hesitant to do the mod but I guess I would allow more than average time to dry it before I install the lights back.

Please feel free to participate - Let it be as informative as possible for both the people who want to do it and the people who want to know it.

PS: Dont point me to the Umnitza guide, I am sure there is more to share and learn than that.
Thanks,
A M

Most important thing is patience. The way I did it was using a soldiering iron to cut the plastic around the headlights. I don't recommend doing this way, the fumes made me very sick and it did not work that well, though it did get the job done. I've heard that some people have started using dremel bits to speed up the process, while others have claimed the headlights are bakable, but I do not believe it personally since I have baked other headlights. The seal on these is too strong. Also get it right the first time. I did not put the seal back on properly around the headlight, I'm talking about the removable seal that goes against the hood. I had completely forgot about it after doing it, and needless to say water got into my hood somehow, and I went thru FOUR HID ballasts before I realized I needed to put that back on. I can't remember what seal I used for it, but I would apply a little glue at a time, and then possibly layer it. Keep in mind also the orions are too big for the opening when you glue it. So you actually have to cut the plastic headlights assembly on the pre-lci headlights. It took me the entire weekend to do, since i was a noob. Also be sure to solder the wires properly. I would not use quick splices since the wires are so small, try to strip them and solder. Also on my headlights they sent me the wrong boxes so verify the boxes BEFORE beginning. I made the boxes I had but can't remember exactly what I did, I did this mod some time back. Both most of all the lights look KILLER.

Superb and detailed write up.
Thanks Phil.

Guys, someone needs to talk about the tools and the glue.

Have any of you successfully baked the lights ?

Has someone actually used the dremel tool that can talk about it ?

Thanks

I've done it once before for my e39. I put angel eyes on m5 headlights and after I sealed them, the bastards kept blowing out. Word of advice... Make sure you do the wiring and install super clean, use the best angle eyes on the market. (you don't want to reopen and seal again) and please try this at home....with silence, patience and time. I'm tried installing mine at night, and finished at like 3am. I had my kitchen looking like the mad doctors house. Lol
I personally wouldn't do it again myself. I'll pay someone.

Great thread

Have you tried reading the installation instructions that are provided by umnitza? I think they have a pdf on their site.

Can't bake the E60's headlights apart. This has been talked about many times and to death.

Use and oscillating cutting tool to cut open headlight.

To glue the rings onto the headlight, I use a glue gun, but other members have indicated issue with it. I have done many installs, and never have issue using glue gun to mount the rings.

To reseal headlight, use this yellow container polyurethane construction glue (can't remember the name). You can find it at Home Depot or Lowes. The curing time is 24 hours. My recent install I've coated the polyurethane glue with a layer of water repelling silicone made by GE called Silicone II. If you have the patience, wait for 24 hours for the polyurethane to cure, otherwise, it's actually okay to coat the silicone over after 3-4 hours. The silicone should be safe to touch within 20 minutes, and good to go in about an hour.

Simon, have you had any post-install problems/issues with any of the Orions you've done? If yes, can you please say whether it was an issue you "created" or inherent issue.

TIA
