For those like myself who already have their ebay lights and are interested in DIY-type approaches, a probe hooked up to the LCM during lunch verifies that it manages the intensity of the 7506's with a PWM. My co-workers and I didn't have a scope handy, so I bread-boarded a small circuit to test whether the voltage from the LCM was repeatedly jumping from 0-12VDC- and it was, in both "running light" and "brake light" operation with varied duty cycles. "Brake light" operation is not a constant 12VDC on my 2007 550i (unsure on other platforms). Instead, it just had a longer on-time than the "running light" signal. I guess the easy/cheapest route to getting this to work is to get a clock running at the same duty cycle as the LCM along with a comparator comparing the clock to the actual signal sent to the lights by the LCM when in "running light" mode, to effectively remove the "running light", but I don't have my own scope to calibrate this sort of thing. I'm going to go a bit overkill and use an Atmel uC (roughly $7 with external oscillator/regulator parts) to sample the LCM signal (by measuring the on-time for the "running light" and "brake light" signals), then have the Atmel uC switch power to the 7506's as brake lights if the on-time exceeds that of the "running light" time.

So went to fedex today to ship the lights to Bruce. And it's $300. Sorry guys but I'd rather sell these and go OEM than pay $300 to ship to Bruce. I'm sad...I know he would have made them even better but I can't justify the $300 shipping. Hopefully someone can figure out how to get those lights in the back off!

Hi West,

Very admire on your analysis!
A couple of questions for you, if you please:
- How would you deal with pulse that check for burnt light bulb? What is that light pulse like?

I wish I had a scope to measure signals from both LCI and pre-LCI LCM. It'd be interesting to figure out how to deal with burnt light bulb check signal and power delivery.

Fred

Happy Holidays.

I have to admit.. but I have a similar problem as LBimmer. The shipping cost is just WAY too high..

Hopefully some of our stateside gurus can work some magic.

Forget Fedex just send one light using USPS. It'll get here in a week instead of 3 days.
