I have 2007 530xiT which has the external audio jack. Plugging my iPod into that does not allow me to operate the unit from the iDrive controller. Am I to assume that this new interface is something additional and there will be some cost to get dealer to install.

Any idea what the cost is?

Thanks.
Chet

It'll be July soon - this is the slowest launched product in history.

No, that would be the flying car. In 1972 it was mentioned by BMW that the flying car would be out by 2004. Of course, to get the ipod interface for the flying car would take another 30 years.

Yes, something additional at extra cost. No, no iidea on cost yet.

My car has 30 miles on it and I am prepared to pry panels out of it this weekend to install eject box and hardwire my Valentine one. I think I will use a plastic putty knife. Its tough to attack parts on my brand new car.

Flying car is just a myth. For the next 50 years, it will and never will become the true daily commute.
True BMW iPod interface is also a myth, too. The one release in July is just a band-aid solution. BMW just rushes to make it happens.

True BMW iPod interface is also a myth, too. It just emulates CD changer.
My prediction is that by the time BMW gets their interface out, Apple will introduce a new Ipod that won't be compatible with it. BMW should just introduce a mass storage unit that you can directly copy music from your CD or radio into it. Basically like a TIVO but for cars. And you should be able to disconnect it and be able to download music from the internet to it.

That's exactly what I said in another thread about the interface. They could make a new iPod which doesn't use the same dock connector... or they could introduce some new feature which BMW has not predicted, and then you'll only have partial functionality.... or some other company might make something better than an iPod.

Look at how many people were waiting for the RAZR adapter.... and now that it's finally out, the RAZR is completely outdated.

I'm actually getting close to trashing my iPod, and going back to CD because of the sound quality.

I leaned toward this, but let me wait for my MP3 retrofit done first to see how it sounds. If it's good enough for my ears, I'd not bother retrofit CD changer. Otherwise, I'll install it myself and ask dealer to do software retrofit ($150).

That is precisely why I went with the simple aux connector - I want to be able to connect anything I chose to the system, and I am willing to trade off the tight integration of a single family of players for that flexibility... (that is probably why I still have separate components in my home stereo - tuner, CD, pre-amp, power amp, etc.).

Cheers, Jon.
