Hi All
I've been asked to look at the possibility of replacing the standard SMG gear knob with the M5 gear knob.
As we all know, the M5 knob has backlighting in it.
My question is, since I do not have SMG myself, does the regular SMG knob have backlighting in it too????
Thanks for your response(s). If this mod can be done, I will post here and also PM the members that asked about this in the first place.
All the Best

Hi,
I know this helps not realy but it?s quite interesting.
Check this out:

Fox 323 has done.
This guy installed the E60 smg in an E46. He had some troubles getting the backlite working.
As I have seen, the E60 M5 knob will work with a manual suspension as well. The hole in the console is also common with all shifting versions so the smg-surrounding metal an leather bag firts on all E60.

Thanks Harry for the info and link
I have been researching this for the past week and in theory I have got the mod worked out in my head.
This weekend (Saturday in fact) I am meeting up with Iceman and Kigerka in Frankfurt for a spot of lunch, car comparisons and then putting a pair of M5 shift levers onto Kigerka's SMG wheel.
At the same time, I'll be looking at Kigerka's centre console and what the smg gear shift lever looks like from inside. Take some pictures and then confirm my thoughts one way or another. We'll also be looking at Iceman's steering wheel which has the wheel heating.
Basically, these are the only things left for me to physically look at and image first hand, then I will know everything I need to know about the steering wheel and gear lever section of any E60/61. I've got all the BMW parts I need to get the M5 gear knob mod done and hopefully will post all the details on e60.net soon (at least a week or two away because on Monday I'm going over to Canada for the Cisco conference.
At least we know that the M5 gear knob is available from stock!
All the Best

We'll post pics of our mini-meet on Sunday/Monday, time permitting.
