Patrick consider the Alpina B5s rear spoiler, it is small and classy. IMO one of the best mods to finish the rear of the car.
Not meaning to hijack this thread, but... I went with the AC Schnitzer rear roof spoiler. It is also small, subtle and adds just a bit to the otherwise boring end of the roof.

The spoiler has been painted and will be installed next Monday. And I will order the M5 gauge cluster while I am there.

About three weeks ago, I had the M5 instrument cluster installed and coded at the dealership, and it works great, but the oil temperature gauge does not function.

I spoke with the tech that did the installation yesterday, and he was surprised by this.

QUESTION: is there something that he should have done during the coding process to make this function, or is it something that is done through the iDrive menu after the coding process?

He did have to go through the some menu in iDrive to reset some service issues - with the new cluster, the car thought that my brakes were shot, and that the engine oil was way too low (there were some other M5 things as well that do not apply to my E61).

The tech did not know the answer to this issue, so he asked me to post a message about here!

If anyone watched the coding process when you had your cluster installed and knows about this oil temp gauge "problem", please reply! Otherwise, we may have to do the coding all over again...

Thanks!

Thanks!

Your transmission, patrick?
On 545i it works on steptronic and on SMG. Don't know the manual (nicke60gre, are you alive and have you finally coded yours?)

Imho it must work on your car too!

What about now, is it still or does it still indicate the consumption as before?

I have the Steptronic transmission.

The gauge doesn't work at all, for either consumption, or oil temp.

?

Patrick, if the coding didn't return any errors and the cluster is new, it should work as a temp indicator.
The problem may also be connected to the fact you have a diesel engine...is there anyone else on the forum with a diesel who's done this mod before ?

The cluster was brand new from Munich, and everything else works perfectly.

The only error was that during the coding, the computer (doing the coding), "suggested" that the cluster could not possibly belong to an E61 diesel (I am paraphrasing/translating from what the tech told me), but it still accepted the cluster.

As soon as the coding was done, everything was good to go: kilometer reading was correct as was everything else aside from the things I mentioned (service indicators, i.e., brake wear sensors thought the brakes were shot, oil level low, next required service was late, etc.).

The tech - a very cool and smart guy that owns three BMW cars and one motorcycle - said that he cannot think of a reason that the temp gauge would not work. There is a temperature sender for the temp gauge just like in the gasoline version. When the installation was done, it was about -10?C here, and I only managed some short drives after the install. So at first, we thought that it was a combination of the cold weather and not driving far enough to actually get the oil temp up. However, the needle does not move at all, even now when it is +10?C and I drive 60km on the motorway.

So, we are both stumped!

He was just wondering if, during the coding process, there is something that he was supposed to do to "activate" the oil temperature function. In a reply in this thread, someone mentioned that during the installation, the owner was asked by his tech if he wanted the gauge to work as a consumption gauge or oil temp gauge - I told the tech about this, but didn't have any clearer info.
