So, to clarify things, the US doesn't get the rear fogs (thank God!) so they decided to use that bulb for the BFD.
Works for me!
Thanks Fred for illustrating what I wanted to explain but didn't have the energy!!

FF, thanks for the picture which clarifies the difference. That particular bulb is labeled the rear and brake lamp for the US market, probably Canada, too.
This is obviously a safety feature for foggy conditions. It's like we don't have dense foggy conditions to contend with in the US, which we do.
Could you tell me how these rear fog lights are controlled? Is there a separate switch from the front fog lights. Must be, because the fronts go out when high beams are on. I would assume the rear fog lights are for rear end protection and not for backing up.
Lots of questions, huh?

The foglights are operated using the top right switch. They only work if main lights are on obviously.
The are a safety feature only when used corectly (visibility <50mtrs), but as always they are misused. They cause serious distraction at night.

Thanks, BMW530 and FF. The picture helped again. That's where my HUD switch is. I can see where the rear fog lights might be as much of a nuisance as a benefit.
