In the States anyway, the '04, '05, and early '06 knobs were satin metal in color, then in late '06 and '07, they changed to the leather-topped one. The '08 LCI knob is actually topped with rubber. It may be different in the UK.

I have been looking for a leather idrive knob myself, but I have not found one. I think I read on another thread that they stopped selling them from BMW because the leather insert would come off. I'm not interested in the M5 one. If anyone knows where to get one, please post!
