So, if I want an iPod Aux port, I need to give up my 6 stack CD player. Would you? Am I holding onto the past too much? Is it time to give it up and move with the iPod?

But the iPod has its own disadvantages... song selection, fast forwarding all have to be done manually, while the CD is fully integrated... my BMW dealer says my 6 stacker plays MP3's, but I've not tried it yet... reading some of the posts on this forum it sounds like the dealer hasn't got a clue as MP3 isn't supposed to come until October/November.

Anyway, interested to know people's thoughts... or is it a no-brainer and iPod all the way?

Why do you need to give up the stacker to get Aux in?

Haven't really touched my CD changer since I put the I POD jack in. Get the car kit, which not only charges it, but also turns it on and off and produces a flatter frequency response. At least here in the states, the changer offers little advantage on controls. either you push the I POD buttons or steering wheel buttons. at least the IPOD shows track info.

My point was that you don't have to lose the cd changer functionality... I agree there will not be much need to use it once you're iPoding

You can have both, I have an Aux in and it doesnt stop me having a CD stacker if I want...depends on your CD collection, better still rip them as MP3's and forcget it altogether

Your dealer is wrong. The CD changer will not play native mp3 files, even when the s/w update does come along in November.

MP3 support will be limited to the in-dash CD

No one has yet come right out and said this but - You do NOT lose your 6 CD changer to get Aux Input. The E60 is not like the old model E46 with a fully integrated solution that gives you one OR the other. This is both, Aux in AND CD changer. Have them install the Aux Jack where U want (default is in Glove Box - but does not have to be there). Adds an audio option to your iDrive entertainment selections in addition to CD/CD Changer.
True, once you get any CD playing MP3s (single slot or Changer) the attractiveness of the not fully integrated Aux input loses some of its advantage and but still another input. But who knows when we will really get this

Your CD changer doesnt play MP3's but your external device via the AUX port does...also depnding on your set up (which has been talked about loads on these forums) you can play MP3's on your single CD in the dash....why have a CD changer, rip the content from your CD's and have thousands of lovely MP's at your disposal....nice

Your dealer is confusing the iPod connector (which is available on some BMW models, but not the E60 yet, and conflicts with the CD changer) with the aux input. I have both aux input and CD changer in my car, and haven't used the CD changer in the 4 months since I had the aux input installed. Here's a post with pix and instructions for my hardwire iPod install:
