I got the factory ipod kit installed a couple weeks ago. I like how it's neatly integrated into the whole idrive experience.

With that said, there are a few very annoying things and I wanted to ask if anyone else has the same:

-when I stop the engine it does not seem to stop playing (I leave the car and come back after a while it's playing a totally different song)
-in Artist browse mode when I select an artist it doesn't list the albums. Just all their songs from all albums in one list.
-"ipod" as such is never displayed on the screen. You have to go to CD, then select CD1..6 (as if from a changer) for the various browsing modes (playlist, artist, album, song, etc..)
-Scrolling through many items is still slow (just like other ipod solutions). Plus I get the iDrive vibrate as well... very "unpleasant" to scroll from A to Z

On my previous E46 ipod kit there was a Setup menu to define how the ipod is charged, what the output level is etc...etc.... I don't have that anymore.

Greg this is the same experience I have as well. At this time I don't think this has been resolved, I got my iPod integration the beginning of last month. Hopefully BMW will address this in future firmware releases.

Ditto that - except for your first point. When I stop the car it does stop playing, and it continues where it stopped. Unlike my CD changer which it replaced.

Another thing I have noticed is that sometimes when I hit the button on my wheel (programmed to mute the sound), it pauses the iPod other times it just mutes it and it plays on. The BT however works well when I get a call it pauses the music, changes screen, and when the call is over un-pauses the music and brings back the last screen (nice job BMW, you got that right).

I just installed the iPod system in my 2004 545 and I don't have the problem of the iPod continuing to play after the car shut off. You might want to contact your dealer to sk them to troubleshoot the issue.

Is this a pain for the dealer to do? I'm interested in getting an Ipod interface - what all is involved with it?

I had the dealer install my IPOD interface and they had to install an older version of the car's software to make it work properly....It works great, it functions just like the in dash CD stopping and starting when the car is turned on & off. Good Luck!
