All, just picked up an 08 e61....great car. Chip and wheels coming soon but that is another thread.

My short term issue is the iPod. I have the BMW integration in the armrest. I have an older iPod, when i plug into the USB port drive won't give me the option to switch from aux to USB. When i try my iPhone 3GS, i can switch to USB but says "device unsupported". Any ideas?

You need to use the BMW cable to connect your iPod to the car. The OEM cable plugs into the dock connector of the iPod and then splits and connects to BOTH the USB and Aux connectors in the storage compartment.

You can try your local dealer, or use one of the forum supporting dealers or getbmwparts.com. While there may be cables available on ebay, etc. you need to be careful as there have been a few versions of the cables which fixed problems with certain newer iPods.

You still may get the error...
Most of BMW cables were designed for the previous version of the iphone software (pre v 2.2 I think) , before Apple switched which pin on the charge cable actually charges the phone ( this is all due to the Micro USB charger standard all cell phone makers are going over to)

You best bet is to look on the phone section of the forum, I have not been keeping up on whether or not BMW is shipping the new cables where this is corrected or not since my wagon does not have it, like my previous sedan.

This have the details. I googled that part on ebay and was able to buy it for $30 bucks. Dealer quoted $95 for that part. Its the Newest BMW Y Cable that charges even 3GS iphones.

Hope this helps.
