My 01/2004 E60 has all the features which seem to deny the installation of an iPOD other than going the hardwire route. BMW apparently supply a connector to the car flashlight socket, and iPOD sell a car charger. They also sell an FM transmitter which allegedly works by tuning in on an unoccupied frequency. Anyone tried it ?
Griffin makes a product called the iTrip, which plugs into the top of the iPod. It broadcasts to an open FM channel. It works "okay". In Los Angeles, there aren't many open channels, so you get lots of crosstalk and static. Much better to get the Aux Input installed at your dealer. I have a Monster iCarCharger, which plugs into the base of the iPod. In addition to charging, it also has a "line out" port, which you can plug (via a male-to-male 3mm plug) into the Aux Input. Much better sound quality. The only thing it doesn't do is integrate into the entertainment system, so you don't see the Artist or Song Title in the BMW display.

Thanks for the advice, I'll go the Monster way I think. I don't have a flashlight socket/connection in the glove box though. Is there a source of power hidden in there?

I plugged mine into the power outlet on the passenger side floor. Interesting that you don't have the flashlight socket in the glovebox. I bought the cigarette lighter adapter that plugs into it from the dealer, and use that to charge my Razr. Since it connects to the car via Bluetooth, I don't have to have it where I can reach it. Keeps things nice and clean inside the vehice.
Good luck!
