Intake Sound Dampener

The difference between the intake (worth a few HP and a much nicer sound) on many cars is the presence or absence of the ridiculous looking intake sound dampener shown (on an E60 inline 6) hanging below item #15 in the diagram below. It disrupts the intake flow something awful. Has anyone found or devised a method of removing this part? For instance, the first thing Infiniti G35 owners do is switch out that part with the one from a 350Z which is the exact same tube minus the wart of a dampener growth hanging off of it. It creates a few HP and a throatier intake sound. I don't see why this couldn't be done with our Bimmers. Anyone?

My April '05 build car has part no. 19. Looks like an easy mod to do. Remove the assy, cut off the dampener, then fabricate a cap for the opening.

Too bad no one makes an aftermarket intake arm piping with that part already removed
