Whats the best way to hack into a 12v power supply in the boot. I have got a 12v power socket adapter as shown in the pic, im thinking of cutting the clips off and hacking into a power source. What do you think?
thanks

I did this on my e39 - the battery was located behind the right hand boot panel. I just hard wired the socket to the battery terminals with an in-line fuse - there didn't appear to be any problems but whether the same would apply with the level of electronics in the e60 is anybody's guess
I travelled to France last year with a powered cool box and it worked very effectively.
There are devices you can get which monitor battery charge, inserted between the battery and the connected item - if the charge drops below a pre-set level (eg. power to the cool box without the engine running) then the device is turned off. I've not actually tried one though.
I'd be interested to try the same with the e60 because we're already planning our wine (er sorry, family!) trip

With all the electronics, going direct to the battery (with a fuse as Bobbin-Man says) is the only safe way.
At risk of stating the obvious, it will be always on so has the potential to flatten your battery (while parked on the ferry!)

thanks, i was thinking of going straight to the battery but was worried about the battery going flat.
Have you got any more info on the "device" that switches the power off?

Try this one at mobilegas.co.uk, - bottom of the page. I've not used one but they seem reasonably priced to give it a try

IF YOU DONT HAVE A LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT 12V OUTLET THEN FIT ONE . LOOK ON BACK TRIM UNDER BOOT RELEASE CATCH YOU WILL SEE A POINT THERE TO FIT ONE.I CAN GIVE YOU PART NO. BUT DEALER CAN FIND EASILLY .ITS A CIGAR SOCKET WITH COVER FLIP UP.WIRE THIS INTO PIN 8 /OR 9 ON WHITE PLUG X11011 ON FUSE PANEL ABOVE BATTERY NEAR THE TOP NEXT TO THE MAIN COVERED 3 STUD FIXINGS.WHERE THE RED HEAVY WIRES EXTEND FORWARD AND TAKE AN EARTH OF LUG UNDER LIGHT FITTING BESIDE BATTERY .
THIS IS THEN CONTROLLED BY THE SYSTEM FOR MONITORING.
CARS UPTO 03 2005 AFTER THERE IS A DIFFERENT CONNECTION ASK DEALER
YOU WILL NEED A CONTACT TO ATTACH WIRE INTO PLUG
PARTS NEEDED
SOCKET OUTLET
EARTH WIRE AND TAG
LIVE WIRE WITH CONTACT
THIS IS THEN CONTROLLED BY THE SYSTEM FOR MONITORING.

Could you show me exactly on the boot trim where you fit the 12v socket? Just circle it in the picture below,
And what is the part number for the part needed?
