Here is the specific information you need to properly add asubwoofer using the wires directly from wiring harness going into the amp in the trunk on the left side of the trunk. Do not use the back speakers as the sound as crossed over from the M-ASK or CCC computer and therefore you are not really getting true sub frequencies

? 1. Unplug the harness
?
? 2. Here are the wires you need going from the amp to the subwoofer:

? ? ? Left sub + RT/WS? ? Right sub? - BL/BR
? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? -? BR/GE? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? +BL/RT? ? these wires a 1.75 mm thick

? 3. Use Crimp Connectors and attach speak wires to these wires. The can be purchased from Roadio and avoid you from cutting these wires.

As a bonus here is the all important ever so useful BMW wire color code chart to decipher the above colors

So, I'm one of the people who has actually already installed a sub in my car, have a bazooka tube in my trunk. Yesterday, after the great post from Lenk!! Thanks! I connected the speaker high-level output from the sub (under the seat leads). This improved the bass responce a lot. I also used a active crossover to give is a 'boost' at 45hz. So the trunk sounded incredible, its only a 8inch 200 watt tube but still pounded in the car.

Now the bad news, the e60 is so well insulated that the bass doesn't come into the cabin very well. I can hear it great when the stereo is turned up but not when I'm listening at lower levels. I don't know about everyone, but its at lower volumes when I like to have bass b/c that is where the standard stereo lacks the punch. At higher levels the bass is actually OK on the standard stereo.

So I think that this weekend I'm just going to take everything out b/c it is not worth it. It does sound great when the back seat divider is down and the ski opening is open, but I just don;t want to drive like that. My quest for bass has come to an end, I proved that it is doable, but the e60 is not really meant to have bass in the trunck unless you get at least a 10inch with much wattage.

Everyone has been asking for pics so I will take pics when I take it all out this weekend. Hope everyone has better luck on their quest ;-)

I installed a sub, with a separate and additional amp, in the trunk of my car - an Alpine 350 watt sub / amp package.

here are some points raised above....

1) The subs under the seats are really just very good mid range / woofers. Adding a sub will really beef up the bass.

2) Always take sub amp power directly from the battery, for two reasons. Firstly, and foremostly, the power requirement of a sub amp is huge, so you don't want to be overheating any wiring that isn't man enough for the job and having to pester the insurance company after a fire! Secondly, if you take directly from the battery, you can be assured of a "clean" supply, so no buzzing, popping etc...

3) In the trunk, there is a accessory socket - use this as the remote switch for the amp - to turn it on and off - much easier than running a wire from the head unit.

4) E60s are fantastically sound proofed. You need to think about how to get the sound from the trunk into the car - I have a ski hatch, and had a grill custom made to replace the ski bag cassette - exactly the same colour as the upholstery, looks and sounds great.

5) It's really easy to get your speaker level inputs from the speakers in the rear parcel shelf. Just prise the grills off, remove the three screws holding the speaker down, and using somthing like a knitting needle, push your new wire down through the sound proof foam into the trunk.

6) If you are going to secure your sub to the trunk floor, for goodness sake check under all the carpeting / sound proofing to see where your screws are gonna end up - there is a huge wiring loom under there, and the cable that take the battery to the engine compartment.

7) To make the bass sound really crisp, install capacitors in line in your existing speakers. This will omit the really low bass notes from those speakers, meaning that the won't distort, leaving your sub to do the hard work.

Think that's about it....if I think of anything else, I'll post again.

================================================== ===

Hi Rob:

I own a 04 "Chris Bangle" 530i with the standard audio system which is nice, but of course I love my music and I want more BASS! (I wish now I paid the 1,800.00 extra and got the logic 7)

If you do not mind, can you let me know what kind of sub did you purchase, and from where, (on the web?), and how much$$$.

Thanks,
Presley348

I am using a 12 incn JL audio 12w3 and JL 250/1 amp which has a fully adjustable crossover, gain and high/lo pass and I can get plenty of base through the trunk whihc is in fact sound proofed. I bought the amp off Ebay for $200 and the sub was $170 an enclosure until my tire well home is finished case $39 installation was $45. less than $500 total I actually had to lower the gain on the amp because I initially had too much base. There are two plastic plugs which can be removed from the trunk near the speakers which help open up the trunk. Anothet thought may be to have the sub facing up to fire towards the small but available openings. I would agree that you need at least a 10 inch sub as we tried an 8, 10, 12, and the 12 worked by far the best for the application.
