Folks, I am in the NY/NJ area and recently installed the new ipod interface unit behind my glove compartment (its actually very easy to DIY - post a request if you'd like instructions). I called my dealer to find out what they'd charge to update the software and he quoted me $250 - which I frankly find absolutely ridiculous!

What have others out there paid for the software update component of the installation?

Here in the UK I have been charged ?300.75 inc vat.

This was to supply and fit interface kit, and recode.

?145.00 + Vat for Ipod Interface Kit, ?110.95 + Vat for fitting and recode.

They had the car on Wednesday but aborted the install after they found out the recode would take 6 Hours.

It has now been booked back in for 2 days to install and recode, price stays the same.

If you're talking about the auxiliary input that they install inside the glove compartment so you can plug in your iPod, I got mine done for $210 at the dealers which included parts, labor and programming.

Not the aux input - I was referring to the new iPod interface. Since I posted the message, I got a quote of $61 from a NJ dealer for just the coding - I installed the interface myself and it was a total cinch!

I hear that people with CD Changer fitted can do it without coding, just replace the CD Changer with the iPod interface. Someone have got to confirm that.

In total, it cost me about 440 EUR, whereby the interface itself was about 270 - so 170 eur to fit and code the sw - 103 eur to mount and 68 eur to do the sw update... do regret not having done it myself, since i had a cd-changer, and there have been postings that a update was not necessary with a cd changer - the sw update has stalled my nav prof...

Folks, apologies for the delayed response! No, I don't have a CD changer in the car, so the connection behind the glove compt. (fibre connector??) has to be activated. I take the car in on Friday for an emissions update and will try to get my dealer (who quoted me $250 for just the sw update) to see his folly and quote me a realistic amount. If not, I'll just take the car to the dealer who quoted me $60 (45 minute job).

Say, should I bring my dealer's ridiculous quote to BMWUSA's attention? Do they give a hoot, or shall I just save myself for another hill?
