Good morning. I would like to change my 4300k bixenon headlight bulbs in my pre-lci 550i to match my new 6000k hid fogs and 6000k led angel eyes. I know that I can buy the bulbs no problem, but how do you actually replace the bulbs? The owner's manual says to take it to the dealer to get the bulb replaced. That is crazy! Take it to the dealer to replace the headlight bulb? Yea right Anyways, if someone can post a DIY for how to replace these bulbs, I would REALLY appreciate it.

there's no DIY, but its really easy.

Just take the headlight off and just take out the outer panel / cover and there's the low beam bulb.

There's a DIY to take off the headlight, from there it's self explanatory.

Great! Thanks. I didn't want to order the lights, pull the headlight and find out that I had to break a seal or something and then end up having to take it to the dealer anyway.

Just make sure you have D1S or D2S bulbs. Some headlights may have the label as D2S, but has D1S inside. Take off the headlight first and take a look at the bulb. And then when the bulbs come in, you'll know what to do right away.

Hi there, I dont have a full DIY, but I did snap some pics of the main things needed to do to change out the bulb.

You will need these tools:
- Torx set
- Socket rachet
- Not sure if it's a 8mm or 10mm socket ( get both to be safe)
-socket rachet extension

Prep: Tape the upper portion of your bumper where it meets with the bottom part of your headlights with masking tape so when removing your headlight you do not scratch up your nice paint.

1.Undo the top screws of headlight.
2. undo botom 2 screws of headlight. ( You will need the socket ratchet and extension with either the 8 or 10mm socket head.)
3. After all bolts/ screws are removed, wiggle out the headlight.

You will see these 2 plugs plugged into your headlight housing. Remove them. ( the bigger one is a bit tricky, you will need to slide then pull to remove it, and opposite to put back.)

4. Remove the back covering of the headlight housing to get access to the ignitor.

5. Unplug the power to the ignitor. Show here.

6. Twist off the ignitor. Arrows are printed on the igintor showing direction for removal. Follow the appropraite direction for reomval of the ignitor.

Twisting the ignitor off shown here.

And here.

7. Next remove these 2 locking pins by pulling them torwards eachother.

Shown two locking pins.

Removing the pins shown here.

8. Now you have access to the bulb to be replaced. Remove it and replace with new bulb.

9. Now reverse your steps to put back and install your headlight.

10. Repeat on opposite side.

All done.

Enjoy your new lights!!!

Don't forget, that's D1S bulbs. Your headlight might have D2S, so always check before hand.

How can you tell if your bulbs are D1S or D2S Mike? Wil it be printed on the bulb or does it look very different from one another?

Well, the one u showed, the D1S has that box on the end. The D2S does not, No way to really tell until you open up the headlight.

If you notice on the outside of the headlight, there's a label that say D2S, but that's deceiving and seems like BMW F'd up on that when the bulb turns out to be D1S.

And yes I found out the hard way. LOL

So your xenon bulbs just have a simple plug like the fogs? Huh... That must be a whole lot easier to change out.

By "box on the end" do you mean the igniter with the "open" and "close" written on top with the arrows? D2S won't have that?
