Just installed an iPod adapter. My 08 535i is pre-wired for a CD changer and is MP3 CD capable, so there were no issues. I only needed p/n 61138387214, it's the fiber housing plug (~$2.50). Really easy install.
When I plug in my iPod I get the BMW symbol on the iPod screen, but the car's iDrive does not show any CD changer info. I'm assuming I don't have the correct coding to enable the CD changer.
How much does the dealer charge for this? I searched here but couldn't find a definitive answer.
Also, has anyone gone to an independent BMW shop and had the coding done? Its probably a newbie question, but I'm not sure if the coding absolutely must be done at the dealership. As we all know, it will probably cost an arm and a leg. Any info is much appreciated.

$50-$150 or more. Completely depends on your relationship with the dealer.

I agree with No Quarter. I recently installed the XM and since I work for the factory here in Spartanburg my cost for the unit was a lot less. The local dealership quoted me 200-300 just to flash it! I called a dealer in Charleston and they flashed it while I was there for a Reserve weekend for 150.00 and provided a loaner car to drive for the day, now thats service! Hopefully, you have access to more than one dealer. I'm curious as to why you even want the CD changer..? If you have the iPod you would have a ton of more music to listen to. My 2008 535 has this factory iPod system already installed and dummy me just figured out that I don't even need an iPod any longer. I have a 16 g and it has ~15.5 installed on it. Well, I was thinking to get a larger one or start deleting music so I could add new stuff. Then, I plugged in my USB that has music on it, into the USB in the console and BOOM, everything displayed on my screen, I mean everything that was on the USB stick. I could only access the music though. When I got home, I plugged in my external hard drive into the USB and the same thing, ALL the music is there and accessible. So, now I bought a small in size external 250g USB hard drive and push the music there and no need to buy a larger iPod. I just added a small piece of velcro inn the console to mount it out of the way. Hopefully, you have the USB or can install this, I think it would be well worth it. The sad thing is that it seems like most changes like this does require the system to be flashed which can get a little pricey. The dealers don't make much $ on just a flash, they would obviously rather install everything and make more $$$. So clearly a good relationship would be helpful.

I don't have or want a CD charger. He car needs to have its software updated to be able to use the fiber optic input that the change and or iPod adapter use.
Without the proper code enabled, you get what I see. Ipod connected and recognized but no output.

San Diego. There's a local member who does coding but I'm not sure yet if CD changer enabling is something that can be done outside of the dealer.
