As always, its a matter of compromise. A lot of it is probably what you are used to and also if everyone else runs on 17s / smaller rims in winter, its an easier compromise to make.
It still stikes me as such a large compromise for those going from 20s etc.
My main choice in 17 inche winter tires is.... Price. the smaller the wheel, the cheaper the tires, and also, you get more grip vs 18 or 19's. And you have more fender gap so you can get through snow easier, just in case.

Winter tires for 18's or 19's are pricey compared to $144 a tire for the 17's.

And last thing.. I dont have to worry about the curb or bumps or anything for that matter.

You SoCal guys don't know what you're missing when it comes to winter sports
We can drive to the snow at any time, we just don't need to switch to Winter tires for our daily drives here in the city!

I can understand the price thing. The only significant money I spent on mods was my OEM rims, so if I was spending as much as you guys on mods I would also think twice about my winter set-up

Have a good time bouncing off the curbs with your 17s...

So why do so many of you compromise on rims through winter ??
Pot holes. A 17" wheel will survive the punishment. Larger sizes are asking for trouble.
