That's what I've been trying to understand too. Unless there's a dyno set up in wind tunnel - a shop fan (no matter how large) can not compress the air enough to test a ram air intake.

The best method would be to monitor the 'hot-film air mass meter.' It would detect a drop in air pressure (i.e. least resistance from intake to engine). Measuring pin 4 of X6207 would show the difference with or with out a scoop [RPI or Mud-pan].

Sure you can, the fan these guys use can provide good air pressure, especially at close distances:

- 125HP 480v 3-phase electric motor, 150 amps at full load
- 3500lbs
- Flows 97,000 CFM @ 6" (rated for pressure)
- 48" blade turbine, pitch variable pneumatically
- 200 mph wind generation

Hahaha. That's epic.

Side note: there are many shop fans that can generate the kind of air pressure necessary to study the relative changes in in take design. While they cannot generate the volume necessary to encapsulate the entire car, they can provide the pressure at a limited location (ie. intakes, perhaps some of the cooling system). Dastek makes a great one. Patterson also has a line that works. Dinan adapted a 35,000 CFM building ventilation system fan to do dyno work. The road will ultimately show an increased gain, especially at higher speeds. However, for testing, these high pressure solutions do give you a good picture of relative effectiveness.

You know these mud pans come in different colors too, so you can coordinate it with your car's look

I wonder why RPI didn't sue that company?
