My bulbs are always quite hard to pull out but it is just a matter of pulling hard.
I always end up touching the glass and pulling. Use a tissue so to don't mark the glass but it really just a case of pulling the bulb hard.
You can always plant a small screwdriver in between the bulb and bulb holder and pry the bulb out as well

So the bulb comes away from the metal bulb holder which sits on top on the plastic? or does the plastic come away?

Bulb comes away from the metal holder, which is secured to the black plastic bit.
For the HID install, from what I remember, the metal bulb holder will come away from the black plastic bit. You'll need to slit the metal bulb holder to allow the HID bulb into it and then to be secured into the headlight. You could buy a specific HID bulb holder (which is already modified) from eBay (I think someone has put a link to this over on the bmwland.co.uk thread you started).

I've just finished trying again. I think I connected the wires correctly however it didnt light up!
I have a problem with the bulb holder though. Could someone tell me how it should be assembled? As you can see on the bulb where the pins should be on the halloge type bulb there are just wires, this looks too big to go anywhere near the black bulb holder?

The silver bulb holder just has the bulb in it and twists into the headlight like stock. The black bit which the silver bulb
Holder is meant to attach to, stays separated and you just push the two small wires into the black bit's holes.

You can do the whole thing in less than 20 minutes if you remove the headlight housing. This time includes removing the housing. As for wiring there are only two ways to wire it right and wrong. Flip the power leads around if it does not light.
