Here's an update:

I had success with a 60GB Hitachi drive and a Dynex external drive enclosure (picked up at Best Buy for about $40). The enclosure is nice because it comes with a leather case and it fits into the lower part of the center console.
Rudy, what type of music files are you loading onto the hard drive, and what compression settings are you using to burn the files onto the hard drive? I want to use the "least compression" format I can use. According to the BMW bulletins I've read, .wav files are supported through the USB interface, but not in playlists. It also mentions that the interface may not function correctly if unsupported encoding is used (bit rates greater than 256kbits/s). Somewhat contradictory. It would be nice if uncompressed .wav files were supported when using a USB hard drive, as you could use Exact Audio Copy to burn excellent music files from CD's to a harddrive for the best audio playback through Logic 7 and not worry about using iTunes' compression file formats on an iPod.

hmm, the files are just copied over to the hdd, they are not burned............

sure you could rip a cd to .wav files. that would give the best sound.

btw, bitrates at 320k is working perfect.

and another thing is, too bad you americans cant get the new Dirac stereo(752). the sound is AWESOME.

My files are all .MP3 format ripped from CD's (I don't do music downloading, I prefer to buy the CD's and not have to mess with DRM, etc.)

I'm going to re-rip everything at a higher bitrate (right now they're all 128kb/s) so I guess I'll experiment a little to see what works but first, I'm going to play with the 80GB drive in the external enclosure to see if that works...

http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-291-2-dyne...-enclosure.aspx

I'm going to try an 80GB drive tonight which is supposedly the largest drive the Dynex enclosure will support (not sure why though...)

At this point, even if the 60GB is the maximum, I'm okay with that!

Haha you were really determined to get a HD working huh? Good job!

This isn't a question, just some info I want to share.

I bought a 525D LCI and as one of the options I took the USB port. Ones I got my car I tried some USB sticks and most worked. The only exception was the combination of a stick with changeable SD card and an SDHC card. More info on SD and SDHC => http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital_card

Then I saw a portable 2.5" USB powered 160GB hard drive (hard disk) from Plextor and tried it. Guess what ... it worked and still works after 3 weeks now. You know how many songs fit on a 160GB hard drive??? Check out the drive here => Link to Plextor site

For SD and hard drive: just copy your mp3's to the medium and plug it in. You can leave your songs in the directory structure as you have it on your PC.

Great stuff!!

Enjoy

Thanks for letting us know what works -- we've been trying to learn these things in the following thread:
http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=42656&hl=

(note to self: It may make sense to merge this topic with the other to keep things together -- let's see what happens...)
