At Bimmerfest 2007 in Santa Barbara, ICEMAN 316, who happens to have the Eisenmann M5 Race exhaust custom fitted onto his 550i, heard torquey5's straight pipes and mentioned that was the route he should have gone. Another benefit would've been his 550i would still be FAST. To much backpressure is making ICEMAN 316's a turtle on the highway and it didn't make his low-end faster.

So to clarify, removing the cats to straight pipes improves the sound the most, rather than removing the three resonators to straights? I personally would rather my exhaust sound like a bat out of hell, rather than being 'slightly' aggressive over stock.

No. Don't remove the stock cats unless you're going to replace them with hi-flow cats.

VT, can you school me into what Torquey5 specifically did to obtain that sound you were writing about in post #3? I really don't want a timid exhaust note. I want something loud and aggressive.

Simply remove your two mufflers and replace with straight pipes. Leave the three resonators in place. By removing the mufflers, it'll also be easier to have a quad setup.

Sweet....thanks Joe. Probably going to go this route, instead of removing the three resonators as I want a much louder setup. I need to see if Torquey5 will send me a clip of his exhaust note. I would really like to hear what it sounds like.

I'm absolutely sure you will love the sound of it. It's easily louder than my RDSport/AFE CAI setup. Best of all it's cheap. Since you are in LA, I would suggest you go to AAA exhaust. Tell them to remove the mufflers and set up the quads. It'll be less than $1K.
