Why is my car burning so much oil? In the passed 6 months I had to add about 3 quarts of oil. I also had to do this a lot with my M3 that I had before. I asked the dealer and he said that you have to do this with High Performance engines. UMMMMMMM My family is in the car industry and That is not normal. But I delt with it and now just after a month I am on Vacation and it comes up again. I AM ABOUT TO JUST TRADE IT IN FOR A NEW ONE! Am I the only one on here that this happens to and I am just unlucky?

Check to see the parking spot or garage for trace of oil leaks.

Adding 3 quarts doesn't sound like "usual consumption"! I don't drive my '07 530xi 'hard', stick to the computer based oil change cycle and haven't had to add oil at any point between changes [currently have approx 30K miles on my car].

How many miles do you drive annually? How many miles on your car now? If you are still under warranty or while under warranty, was "excessive consumption" noted?

I do drive a bit hard, I drive on avg 20k a year. I now have 63k on the car I got the extended warranty. And they have not noted the excessive consumption. I am on vacation now and will have to take it to the dealer in atlantic city, NJ Not sure how good they are but I guess ill find out soon!

Based on your avg mileages, you do put a lot of miles on the car. To me, it seems logical that it would consume more oils than normal. But if you think this is abnormal, then you should have the dealer looks at it. GL and enjoy your vacation.

Poor break-in procedure......over revved in the early miles?

The "Atlantic City" BMW dealer is actually in Egg Harbor Township ... their service department is OK. Driving is part of the reason most of us drive BMWs. 20k/miles per year is high average but should actually be "good" for keeping your car's muscles in shape. But you should not expect to add 3 quarts in the span of a few weeks unless you have a notable leak or are 'burning' in because of some internal engine problem. Have you kept track of the number of quarts added and mileage? Record keeping is very important to leverage and manage warranty adjustments and repairs.

Good luck with your issue - let us know how it works out.
