Simply a remap is a code modification to the car's engine control unit (ECU) software. Stock cars are a compromise between reliability, fuel economy, drivability, and power delivery. Because not all drivers are enthusiasts who seek to squeeze every bit of performance out of their cars (and are willing to take the required steps to ensure this), mass-market manufactures must make compromises to ensure the cars sold are reliable even with a minimun of attention. A remap removes many of the engine power related compromises manufactures put into their control code binaries by altering the air/fuel ratios, timing curves, rpm levels, shift points, and other areas within the ECU. These modifications can create modest improvements in power, optimize shiftpoints for performance, and alter the optimal power delivery curve. But, they require use of premium fuels at all times, can create harsher shifting patterns, and can alter the luxury/performance curve more toward the performance part of the equation. Not drastically so, but definately noticeable. A good, trusted remapper has performed extensive research and testing to determine these optimal points. The remap must be uploaded to the ECU (which usually requires removal and specialized equipment to read and upload the code). If you are an enthusiast, you'll love it

You'd be surprise. Just search around for BMW performance shops. Or chances are, there's a BMW dealer near you that is still a Dinan dealer, or maybe just an independent Dinan dealer that will sell Dinan software remaps.

Your other option is to pick the company you want to go with and send them your ECU to get the software loaded. Your car would be out of commission for a few days while the ECU is in transit though.

Or if you really know what you are doing a generic remap can be loaded directly over the net
