Usually vibration due to balance becomes apparent at 40-45 MPH. If you have no vibration at that speed, it could be some other suspension issue or even a bent wheel.

hub rings are not even in the question. he has oem wheels which dont require hub rings. i think he said he had 17in 138's.
To the op: google hunter road force balance. there is a machine locator on there site. it will tell you where the nearest certified shop is that has the hunter machine. this machine is the best machine when balancing wheels. it applies pressure to the wheel during balancing to simulate driving on a real road. this machine will also tell them if a rim is bent. hope you get the problem solved!

I disagree. I have stock 18" 124's and without the hub rings on the rear I had a vibration. Put the hub rings on and it went away.

stock wheels dont have hub rings. what are you talking about??
The first step is finding a Hunter road force machine. However, only about half of the users of these machines know how to calibrate the machines (and actually calibrate them).
Many people buy used Hunter road force machines, and they are clueless.
I once went from one place that had a Hunter 9700 (without calibration) to a place that had a calibrated machine. The readouts were off by more than 75 grams (enough to ruin your day).
The best dealers can balance your tires to 12.5 grams. The smallest weights are 25 grams, but you can find 12.5 grams weights if you actually look on the internet.
These larger wheels are sensitive to imbalance.
At the end of the day, there are only a few places that you can trust, and the BMW dealer is probably one of them.
DO NOT go to TIRE KINGDOM or TIRE PLUS or COSTCO if you really want your wheels balanced correctly.

if you have to use hub ring it gotta be replica rims... oem wheels do not require hubcentric rings...

Ok I give up, just got back from some highway driving, and the car shakes like hell. I think I am gonna go to the dealer to get the balance done.
Could the tires be faulty? Have any of you folks have had bad tires that could not be balanced to the point that they have to be replaced under warranty? I bought Sumitomo tires from tire kingdom, maybe that was my first problem....

have you pinpointed the problem to a specific wheel? front or rear? did it happen right after mounting tires?
