anyone installed one of the OEM illum gear knobs in their E60?
i had one in my E46 and connected it to the power of the LED inside the ashtray, the E60 however does not have that LED.
worried that if i connect it to the directly to the ashtray it will stay on all the time/won't dim with the dimmer controls.
also does anyone know if the illum knob is the same length as the short/heavy m sport one which i currently have?

I had this on my black e60, bruce makes an adapter from the menu button. he takes the power from there splits the wire so it goes to the shift, its a nice mod, I liked it.. right now I'm looking for a weighted shifter

East fix. I spliced into the wire that lights the iDrive buttons. When interior lights come on the knob illuminates too.
Great mod which they should have done at the factory...

I did this too but with an aftermarket knob. I dont like the ///M in a non M car and also the Red LED in the M cars dont match the Amber leds in mine. I actually prefer the one I used than the one above.
But yes, either the idrive menu button or the lighter rings can give you a source that dims with the rest of the car.
