If Dinan does not provide you dyno numbers you should take it to a dyno shop. I'll be heading up to the Bay Area for work soon so maybe we can do a group dyno day. I know that EuroCarFan would be interested as well. Anyway, your Dinan tuned 550i should be dynoing greater than 306 whp = ((360 fwhp * 15%(6speed & SMG, 20% for Step) drive-train loss) - 360). If you are at 314 whp that would equate to 370 fwhp = (314 whp / .85). Hopefully, your dyno number is in excess of 325 whp = 382 fwhp.
I had ask my sales guy at Dinan about doing dyno tests on my car and this was his reply:

In short, don't waste your time dynoing your car. It takes a lot of work to acheive acurate numbers. For a very long explanation, go to the white papers section of our website and read the paper Steve wrote on dyno procedures.

I haven't had time to read up on that dyno paper on their website. I've also been hesitant about doing this because of what I read about choi000's car. I remember he had a lot of fault signals after he did his car and his numbers were way off...very low horsepower but ridiculously high torque numbers (over 400 if I recall). And his car only had basic mods like mine so maybe his dyno shop didn't do it correctly???

I don't know. Perhaps the dyno shop by my house would have more answers and is capable of doing it right? I just don't want to have a bunch of issues with my car afterwards but I'm very interested in knowing.

Here is the problem between Dinan's dyno test and a dyno shop.

Dinan has a fan bigger than a mini cooper that can simulate road speeds of almost 100mph. An engine is like a giant air pump, the more air that you can get flowing into it with the RIGHT fuel mixture = more power.

Dyno shops use fans that CAN'T simulate 30 mph road speed so the car is not getting the proper air that it would at 80mph therefore = Less Power

Anyone that thinks you can just strap your car on a dynomometer with a shop fan in the front and get even close to real world numbers you are incorrect

Because of Dinan's setup they will ALWAYS achieve better hp/tq numbers than a "Dyno Shop"

I don't buy Dinan's explanation. I haven't read his white paper yet. It just sounds like a cop out to me why Dinan can't achieve the desired hp/torque numbers with their mods. Here is a dyno graph provided by VF Engineering. It's found under the 645 but it's really the dyno chart of a stock 545. This is what was told to me when I visited VF Engineering back in December 2006. The correct conversion from wheel horsepower to flywheel horsepower is 280 hp / .85 = 330 flywheel horsepower. Dinan is not the be all and end all of tuner shops.

I remember looking over the thread that choi000 created about his dyno chart. I looked into the mysterious 400 number he briefly saw. I believe what he saw was 450 Nm@3600. Convert to lb-ft = 330 lb-ft@3600.

Anyhow, when I take my 545i up to San Jose I'm definitely going to get it dynoed. ECF you can join me if you want.

JetBlack, I did see their dyno room and yeah, the fan is huge. I do agree that such a fan could better replicate real world driving situations. The flip side however, which has also been a much debated issue is that such a fan could also over-exaggerate the power gains? Just a thought...

Vegas, Dinan didn't say they couldn't achieve the desired (or probably stated) hp/torque numbers. If you're referring to the quote I posted from my sales guy, I took it as him suggesting that there's more variables involved not that they couldn't replicate the numbers. I know they dyno their cars cause I've seen their 545 strapped up to the dyno when I first visited their facilities over a year ago. That said, I am curious how come those dyno sheets aren't posted.

Anyway, my thought on this whole thing is that a general dyno shop may not be as accurate as a dedicated tuner shop like VFE or Dinan. Both VFE and Dinan probably were very meticulous and detailed in performing dynos on those cars because they're doing development work on those cars whereas a general dyno shop may not.

I'm game for the dyno runs when you're here as long as I can find a place that can guarantee my car won't go berzerk afterwards...

No worries. I'll be the first to go. Can't wait to see if my instrument cluster will light up like a Christmas tree. Also, I've already found a dyno shop near where we both live.

What's the name of the place? Darwin told me there was a shop by my house but I forgot the name. Somewhere off Almaden Expressway. I think they charge around $80 for 3 runs.
