I heard rumors about BMW aftermarket performance equipment, but where is it? I want engine software and I was hoping BMW might offer an alternative to Dinan?

I was reading the M5 forum about the new Dinan software for the V10 and it claims to revise the torque limiting aspects of the OEM engine management software. IMHO the 550 has a similar software driven torque nanny. Have you every noticed the raw fury of the engine on the highway vs. the schitzophrenic power delivery in town. On the highway its all 360+ horses galloping in full stride, but around town it regularly feels like a few of the ponies are intentionally being kept in the barn. Maybe the Dinan software will improve this?

I love it when people take the term "horsepower" and beat it to death as a metaphor.

Steve Dinan is out to make money, and with how secure and complex new ECUs are it takes a profound investment to break into that system and change things. They need to weigh that cost against the possible amount of people that are willing to void the warranty on their $50k car just to make it go a little faster.

The M5 has a different kind of buyer than the 550/545, so that?s where they think their investment will return.

To answer your question, BMW really is going to come out with aftermarket performance products. My Service manager showed me a printed brochure indicating a July 2007 deployment. It appears they are late. He keeps saying, any day now.

As far as software re-mapping goes, I doubt seriously if your butt will be able to detect a difference.

If you have a manual, I would suggest the rear dif change to be more noticeable, but at a higher price. Also, the lightweight flywheel will give you less rotating mass and more power to the wheels, but again, at a price. If going with a rear dif change, I would also do the software just to get the additional 200 RPM's that will offset the gearing changes on shifts.

It will be interesting to see what BMW offers and at what price points.

Interesting to see this comment stirred the waters a bit.

I had Dinan software and equipment on my last car. This sounds odd, but try this on for size: I don't care how fast the car is or how much power it makes. I want Dinan software because I care about how fast the car feels from the driver's seat.

The engine software raises the rpms (in my opinion irrelevant...I couldn't care less about this); it removes the top speed limiter (this one I do like...The face on the driver of an S55 Mercedes I left behind in my last car as he hit his 155 limiter was priceless) and last - and by far most importantly - the software remaps the throttle to trick the driver into thinking the car has more power. More gas shoots into the motor with less of a push on the pedal. It gives the driver the feeling that the car is lighter and the engine more powerful. This is what I lust after. Not impreceptible differences in peak torque or horsepower, or a .1 sec difference in the 1/4 mile. The car is fast as is, I just want it to show its power more frequently and with greater percieved ease.

And all Dinan products come with a warranty that shadows BMW's, so there is absolutely no voiding of the warranty.

Thanks for the info. about the brochure, I'll check with my service guy next week.

Wouldn't the Sprintbooster give you that, for a lot less cost?

You can use the Sprint Booster in conjunction with a software remap. Vegastrashed has both on his 545 and he absolutely loves it.
