I was thinking of doing the Dinan S package, its around $3,700 for parts + labor. Is it worth the price?

Any advise would be great.

Thanks

I looked into when I had my 545 SMG. From what I recall, very little horsepower and torque gains. Even Dinan admits that the BMW engine tuners got near maximum performance from the newer V8's. I opted not to get it.

The only obvious hp gain will be to replace exhaust manifolds/cats to extractor manifolds and metal matrix cats.
More expensive though.

High flow throttle body etc. is not value for money.

If you do a search one member got an ecu for his 545i from Dinan about 6 months ago and did a dyno before and after and lost power. He was quite upset, as you can imagine. I'm not sure if Dinan fixed the problem with the tuning or not. In regards to other tuning options that offer more hp and torque then Dinan if your BMW service center put there computer on your car it can find out how many times the ecu has been flashed, if the tuner does not reset the file to show no upgrades have been done. I think if I was going to do it I would use powerchip or someother company out there.

When I had my 550i, I pretty much built up (part after part) a "semi-S1" package (the only part I didn't get was the rear strut bar to have an official S1 car). Anyway, in the 2 years I had my Dinan550, I felt the power change (+30 hp) was tremendous. At least, in my opinion it was. Throttle response was immediate, acceleration was furiously torquey, and handling was super sticky in the corners yet comfy and not super stiff when cruising. Best of all, the exhaust note was never overbearing. Droning was mellow, not obtrusive, and only occurred between 1500 - 2000 rpm regardless of what gear you're in. The only growl you'll hear from the exhaust was at startup or past 5000 rpm. Otherwise, cruising at highway speed was always quiet.

If you're planning to get the S package for your 545i, I strongly suggest adding the Dinan throttle body to take advantage of the increased air flow from the Dinan air intake. So instead of 349 hp, you'll have 354 hp to play with. May not seem like a lot but it sure made a believer out of me when I test drove Steve Dinan's project Dinan5 545i which was equipped with every Dinan product possible. Here's something to read if you haven't seen/read it yet:

Dinan5.pdf

Whether the package/price is worth it totally depends on you. Some say it's a waste of money because Dinan's products are expensive. Some say it's worth it because Dinan invests tons of time into R&D for their products and backs them with a warranty. Personally, I wouldn't put anything else on my old 550i or current M5 if "Dinan" isn't stamped on it. As is always said, to each his/her own. Good luck with whatever choice you make.
