I guess Hollywoodtrash and I aren't the only ones interested in the M5 differential. Dave Baron of Baron's BMW is doing research at the moment. Hopefully, I'll hear back from him at the latest Friday. Don't worry, this thread is not going to die like the other differential threads I've searched.

My Ride: 2004 545i 6spd, blk on blk, HRE 540R 20x9 in front and 20x10 in rear with Pirelli PZero Neros 245/25/20 front and 295/25/20 rear. H&R springs, and Eisenmann quad exhaust, V! radar detector, black grille, limo tint all around.

UPDATE: Heard back from Dave Baron. He's still not certain if the swap of the diffs will work. He's still researching. I'm certain it would. I have read in other forums about e39 540s having installed e39 M5 diffs. So, I don't see why the e60 would be any different.

News is not good from what I heard from Dave Baron. It is not a simple swap of diffs. It still is doable but I'm pretty sure the price will increase due to the extra work and parts to make it fit. He even recommended that I look into a 545 Step diff as an alternative. Well, we have discussed that earlier here and that is still viable.

I'll give him some more time to look at the M5 diff. Once he has all the information, I'll sit and talk to him and determine whether it is cost effective to pursue this mod project.

$2K for just the Dinan diff w/o labor is kinda steep. I'll wait until I hear back from Dave Baron before I ultimately make a final decision.

I was at the dealership today and I talked to the parts department guy and he said that the M5 rear diff would not fit onto the 545i/550i. He said the parts numbers were different and that if the parts numbers were the same then it would be compatible. Can anyone confirm that? He also said that the cost of an M5 rear diff was about $1800 plus you have to give your stock rear diff to them.

That's about the same thing I heard from Dave Baron. The price the dealer quoted you is on the higher side and you do not have to give them your stock diff if you pay the core fee ($100). This is an excerpt of two emails I got from Garry Romani:
