Finally it would appear that Dension have released the Gateway 500 for BMW. Dension France are now selling it on their website! http://www.dension.fr/boutique/fiche_produ...;pag=1&num=

Shame really I ended up getting the BMW Ipod connection cos I got bored waiting for Dension!! Although it does seem to work OK!!

Cheers

officially it is not yet out but will be in days, talked to Dension some days ago my unit is pre-ordered some time and will come, you need a cd-changer to have that working but heared that the menu will be nice on the I-drive screen

Yeah, I noticed the install manual on the Dension site now includes E60 fitting instructions so it does look like something is imminent. The only worrying thing (for me at least) with an early model E60 that cannot play MP3 cds is that there appears to be two sets of dip switch settings; one marked BMW, the other BMW MP3. I'm wondering whether this might mean early E60s will not be able to display song text information on the I-drive without an code update. This seems similiar to the issue with BMW's own I-pod interface on first release.

ATS77...I would be really interested on how you get on with your unit. I'm reading the Porsche threads on their GW 500 experiences and it sounds encouraging.

Hi,

i FULLY agree to this. I don't have an IPOD yet. Thinking about getting the 80GB version for my complete collection. But this is only an option, if the Dension GW 500 is
a) FAST enough to handle such a huge collection
b) NOT LIMITED to list of 255 entries (like the BMW solution is)

One thing which is also making me think is the IPod itself. I don't like the way it organizes the titles too much. I prefer "Artist -> Album -> Title" organization. IPod only offers "Album -> Title" or "Artist -> Title" so no chance to listen to a certain album if you don't know it's title but the artist... (yes - some Artist have bad albums ).

All the reports I have read on the Dension seem to indicate it uses some sort of paging mechanism to avoid the speed issues seen by other interfaces. Here is a thread where you can see user experience of the GW500 for Porsche: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...&hl=gateway

Experience seems to indicate it copes reasonably well with large Ipods. I have an 80G Ipod so also have the same concern.

Again I think the paging approach might overcome the 255 song limitation (which I think relates to the E60 itself) but I guess we won't know if/when this gets released and tested by an early adopter.

It's definitely out now. I had asked Dension support for info on it, and I received the following last Tuesday:

"Hi, your car (04 530ia Silver Gray/Black) is fully supported now, please contact your dealer, and ask him for a Gateway500 MOST system device with FW 1.05."

I also got the same message, confirmed and ready for the BMW from Dension.

I've got a call into Maxxcount.de as I'm on their waitlist but haven't been notified of stock yet

Spoke to a guy at autobra.co.uk (same phone number as speed-detectors.co.uk) today. They have the unit in stock, but they aren't guaranteeing them for iDrive just yet, apparently due to some remaining issues with the firmware (don't know what).

The compatibility list on the Dension website ( http://www.dension.com/oem2.php?car_id=1014 ) is now showing E60/61 supported with part number GW5RMT01D1. But I think I'll hold off until the UK retailers will sell them as iDrive-compatible, otherwise if there is a problem then the retailer has no obligation to fix it.

Still, I think I can wait a couple of weeks - I only just picked up my E61 530D this Saturday

Oh dear more confusion, I just heard the Dension 500 gateway can only support March 05 onwards (which if I recall was the same issue as the BMW IPOD interface had when it came out). Also not yet in stock anywhere I can see. Since I have a Dec 04 car if this is true I'm stuffed
