I can't provide much advice on the installation itself as I left that to my installer. However if you haven't done already I would suggest putting the latest copy of the firmware (v2.03) on a USB stick (ensuring that it is FAT32 filesystem, not NTFS - check the drive properties in Windows if not sure). Leave the USB stick with the installer and ask him to load it up (this is done simply by connecting the USB drive and waiting) and test it after the new firmware is loaded. My GW500 arrived with old firmware (v1.05) that is completely useless with I-Drive. Otherwise the installer won't be able to check that it's working properly.
Jackdaw's advice is to do this with the engine running, and give it 5 minutes (although I think it actually completes in under a minute).

Good tip and have taken the advise.....
Thanks
can anyone give instructions on how to get the usb and ipod cable into the compartment under the phone prep? Does the whole centre tunnel have to come out?

OK.. just had the GW500 installed in my E60..
Have to say the installer did a brilliant job (as always) and all works just fine... Thanks for the tip to update the firmware.. worked a treat...
Will try to get some photos posted but in principle, it sounds great, and I have over 2k songs in my car right now... enough for any long journey..

It does not screw up Dension, but SSS MIGHT complain that it cannot program the module (CD changer as it sees) . It might inform technician that CD changer is defective, and "CD changer" needs to be replaced before proceeding.

In this doc: GW500_MOST_Install_Guide_v4_2007.06.25.pdf they seem to mention:
" When you have your car serviced you must set the mode
selector switch to service mode/bypass, CD Changer/
position otherwise the service computer may detect an
unknown device in the fibre optic system witch can lead
to errors reported. "
So looks like that will care of it.
Have to find a installer that will do this for me.. BMW independent techs are charging $100/hr close to Dealer Costs, not sure whats the point in going for Independent Technicians when they charge very close to Dealer costs.
