Dension 500 - External Hard Drive?
So, I've read that external hard drives (US
can be used with the Dension 500. Hard drives are WAAAAAY cheaper than iPods...so this is the route I'd like to take. The problem is, just about every external USB drive I look at either has a power supply or needs 2 USB ports to power it. Does anyone have a larger (150 GB+) drive working with their Dension? If so, which model? How are you powering it?

You can get a 2.5 drive, USB powered external. I've seen a Hitachi 300gb for roughly $65 for the 2.5 drive and like $6-10 dollars on the external case.
I just picked up at 160gb hitache 2.5 drive with casing for $55. I bought it before I saw the deal for the 300gb drive!
But anything bigger than 300gb i think will take a while to load on the dension. Also.. I doubt you can fill the HD with 500gb's of music... Can you? LOL

Cool. Thanks for the suggestions. I definitely don't need 500+ GB, but I'd like over 100 GB and don't want to spend $300 on an iPod when the drives cost less than $100.
Thanks again!

Okay, just finished installing the Dension 500, and it seems to be working. I also installed the latest firmware.
Unfortunately, the Dension doesn't seem to be supplying enough power to the USB drive I bought! After a minute or two, the hard drive will turn off, then restart a few seconds later. The hard drive came with one of those double-USB cables. Oh well...gonna need to find a HD that draws less power. Just wanted to warn others that they might have the same problem.
This is the HD that I'm using: Western Digital Scorpio WD1600BEVS 160GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 1.5Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive , with a standard external case/USB adapter.
If anyone else is running into problems, post the specific model you're using so others can avoid it. Also, if anyone can confirm a specific HD that seems to be working, please post details!

I've got a hitachi 160gb drive and it works fine for me. its Sata 1, USB powered.
What format did you use for your drive? make sure u use fat32 to format it. It'll only work in FAT32. And dont use windows to format it, use partition magic or some type of formatting software.

Yeah, formatted in FAT32 with partition magic. The music will play for a minute or two, then the hard drive dies.
