My Ride: 545i Orient Blue, Auburn Int. Sport Pkg, Premium Pkg, Satellite Radio, Logic 7 , Nav... European Delivery 3/21/05 Redelivery 6/1/05.
Default

I was at my local BMW center and noticed a display of Chrome wheels that matched the stock wheels on BMWs. I asked the parts guy if they have any for my 545i. He said that what they do is take your wheels off of the car, ship them to a vendor they use for chroming, then reinstall after road balancing back on your car. This vendor does so many of these that they actually have an inventory of these wheels so essentially it is just a swap (same day service). Long story short, I was wondering what the group thought of this? I have the sport package and feel that with an Orient Blue car that my wheels chromed would look really good? Any experience? Price is around $200 per wheel.

I think with the dark orient blue or a black car chrome would look great! I have silver gray and plan on changing wheels to a lipped wheel with a silver finish. Nothing goes better with black than chrome!

Try to find somebody who has done it.
It's not that easy to chrome aluminum wheels so that they would look nice after a year or two.

dont do it he is right, we here in Europe did not do it is not nice nor safe.
What big tuners do here real like Hamann ACS etc they make the ALLOYS in a color of close to chrome but if the chrome layer weakens even after being sand, the alloy can break.

In the US you think about this different, search BUSTA he is a G guy he has it I like it on his, but chrome is for show and alloy is for PERFORMANCE...

I have to disagree. Chrome alloy wheels have been around a very long time and the only horror stories I've heard is from pealing/flaking of the chrome. Never any structural problems.

Just make sure you buy from a reputable dealer and make sure the wheels are "triple" chrome plated and comes with a 2 or 3 year warranty.

I had chrome wheels on my E320 for about 4 years and not a single problem with them. No pealing/cracking/flaking at all. They are very easy to take care of also. If you keep good care of them, not much sticks to chrome!

It's personal preference. And it's not my personal preference, although I'd really have to see one first before making a decision like that.

I'm very surprised that this place would have enough of your exact E60 rims to to a 'wheel exchange' with same-day service.

On certain cars chrome looks nice. maybe someone can pull it off on the e60, but you would have to choose the proper wheel. I think a nice fat chromed lip is real nice though, really makes silver alloy spokes stand out much more.

But for the e60. for a mix of looks, and performance alloy all day! remember chrome is quite heavy as well. so take that into account.

I think your dealer is sending the wheels out to the "Wheel Exchange" or "Chrome Exchange" They advertise in most car mags. You may be able to do it though them cheaper.
