Wanting to remove the charcoal filter on my 2007 530i. Heard it might cause the "check engine" light to come on.
Any insights?

I took mine out last week and all I will say is to becareful because as the car was getting used to the filter not installed it jumped a few times while I was in my driveway! (it revved up is what I mean) But now its fine and feels like it has a lil more oomph!

it might be that the engine and computer needs time to readjust a bit due to the change in airflow.

Does taking out this filter improve gas mileage or increase horsepower at all?

probably slightly, particularly if the charcoal filter has a lot of miles and may be dirty.
