i called up a few autopart stores to find the K&N air filter. now i jus found this a lil amusing, so far 6 shops gave me these prices: $96.99, $89, $86, $81.40, $75.80 and $69. the prices are quoted in Canadian dollar. was wondering if anyone bought the K&N air filter in the 905/416 area and what was your price that you paid? or does anyone know where i can order online that is cheaper than $69CDN??

sorry... this is kinda off topic but... i found this in the reviews for the k&n filters..

"k&n filter for 2006 m3 conv. will void bmw warranty and had to be removed and thrown away. BMW states that the oil on the filter will limit the life of the o2 sensor whicj is just downstream of the filter, making it an unacceptable product for this vehicle!!"

does it really have anything to do witht he warrenty??

 

i dont believe it does... my service advisor knows about it and said that it was fine.

 

I don't use K&N's for the fact if mis-oiled they will dirty up the throttle intake and general air going into the engine. The 02 sensors are in the exhaust piping so that guy is wrong on that matter. Also in used oil anaylsis' they have proven to cause much higher levels of silicon readouts due to the dirt getting past them (obviously less restrictive). I would much rather use an OEM one that keeps the engine clean, your butt can't feel a 2-3hp difference...it may feel more responsive however.

 

I TOOK OUT MINE AS WELL... IT`S THE SAME TO ME... NO DIFF AT ALL.... I REALLY DONT THINK I`M GOING TO FEEL A 2 OR 3 HORSE POWER DIFF....... MAY BE CAUSE I`M DRIVIN MY 335 MORE..... BUT UNDER STAND ONE THING THE E60 IS UNREAL... AND NOTHING LIKE IT OUT THERE

 

Buy it for $69. Too many of the US sites don't ship to Canada, or if they do, they want $30 for it. The cheapest I found online was autobarn.com or something like that, $49.99 + $15 shipping. So you might as well buy it locally.

 

Just to let you know, the cheapest place I found it online was on Amazon.com and were selling the K&N filter for the E60 (part #33-2292) for $43.36 with free shipping in the US. I live in Vancouver, Canada so I just shipped it to a friend just across the border and went and picked it up.

 

No, it doesn't make sense when you think about it. You can't force air into a combustion chamber without something to compress the air and keep it from escaping the intake tract.

All those fans are doing is generating a high enough wind on the car to simulate driving, which is actually a more accurate test than a little fan. With more air moving over the radiators you have the engine running cooler, and when the engine runs cooler the ECU can afford to advance the timing and gain power.

I spoke with an ex Dinan engineer about this filter the other day, he said that 90% of the gain they got from their CAI on the e60 was from removing the charcoal filter. He also said that the gain was proportional to the amount of air the motor moved. The gain is pretty small on the 530, but really pronounced on the M5.

 

So how much HP and Torque does he figure the 545 gained with the filter removed?

I removed mine and I felt that the car is smoother. Not sure I feel actual HP increase though.
