It'll pop off. It only looks molded.

Take a flat head screwdriver and pry it around the edge. It will start to pop off. In fact, it has clips on the inside which keeps it nice and snug and makes it look like it's "molded" in there. But it's not.

Dear Fellow Charcoal Filter Modifiers,
I took my filter out about a month ago. Improvement in idle, acceleration, and engine noise were all negligible as far as I am concerned. The 545i is a terrific performing car with or without the filter. The one thing I did notice was great fuel economy. I drove from Austin to Dallas two weeks ago on I-35 which is torture, and on the way up I stayed in the left lane and buried the throttle when the turtles would finally move over. I averaged over 70mph and got 27 mpg. On the way home I got tired of the hassle and followed some slow moving traffic. I averaged 62 mph and got a whopping 29 mpg. If I hadn't sped up at the end it would have been 30mpg. One final thing. Today my "service car soon" light went off. I checked the computer and it says the car's emissions are out of whack. Has anyone had this happen after taking their filter off?

No, but that is interesting. Anxious to see if anyone else has seen the same warning.

Wow, I'll have to think twice about removing it then...

Or maybe it was really his time to go for service?

The purpose of the filter, per that link, is to prevent backwash of tainted air from the intake into the environment. Whatever.

Seems like no one else is having that same problem after removing the filter
