The filter has excessive oil. Use CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner every time you clean or change your air filter. Don't over oil K&N filter.
I've been using K&N filter minus charcoal prefilter with no problem whatsoever.

Thanks Rizbel! Do I just take off the sensor screws, pull out the sensor and spray it with the cleaner?

I would try to leave the sensor alone... dont take it off if you dont have to. I forget what I did last time when I took apart the filter housing... I believe there was enough wiggle room to not have to pull the sensor off just lift it high enough and remove the filter and oil / clean it like that.

Had the car stall at first but it went away after a few weeks.

You just have to learn to shift your car quickly to neutral to allow it to restart while moving.

I had also removed the charcoal filter.

As someone explained it here, without the K&N filter, it is like running 10kms with cotton stuffed in your nose.

When you remove the cotton, it will feel different.

Open air filter housing, take filter out and aim spray towards sensor. You can loosen a clamp screw to rotate housing for easy access to the MAF.
Follow manufacturer's instruction for cleaning MAF sensor(engine off).

what is this stuff about oil-ing the airfilter??

and i was going to instal the K&N airfilter plus remove the filter....however i heard about stalling issues and have stepped away from changing the airfilter.

is it only the manual trans that have experienced stalling? or has auto tranny owners experienced the same stalling issue?

You're obviously not familiar with K&N OE Replacement Air Filters (washable and reusable) . Here's a link.

I have the charcoal filter out and the K&N in -- never any stalling when I switched over.

Ditto here. No problems whatsoever.

i installed the charcoal filters and added the k&n at the same time. when i first fired up the car, the revs would fluctuate at idle, but the car never stalled. after a while, idle became smooth again as the computer re-adjusted. i suppose your revs will fluctuate a bit as well after installation, and may even stall if they fluctuate more severely than mine, but should be fine after you drive it.

as for re-oiling the k&n, that is only required after a few years or xx,xxx miles. i've heard some horror stories about ppl applying too much oil and causing problems with the maf. so after a few years, i'd rather just spend another $30-40 to get a brand new k&n than try to re-oil it and risk messing it up.
