My Ride: 2006 550i - Silver-Grey - Sprint Booster
Default

I used to have a short CAI in my 05 FX35 - sounded great and I felt a good difference in power. I'm now thinking about getting one for my 550i. Tried doing a search on the topic before posting, but only found that the sound above 4k is GREAT!!. Well, I want that great V8 sound I read about. A couple months ago I also read that Short CAI isn't really worth it; the heat, etc actually work against you. I've seen Dinan online but they want over $1k for theirs. Afe is the one I heard about the power loss, but I recall you could get almost 40 hp gains with theirs - ????

I haven't done any exhaust mods, but I'm seriously thinking about the CAI option. Any help would be great. I want that cool sound I had and from my reading it will sound even better with my v8. On the other hand, I don't need the power loss I've heard about - I could be completely wrong - HELP!!

Keep the stock box and remove the charcoal air filter...

http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=21796

That will give a bit more "sound" and won't lose power

from what I have heard/read on CAI discussions, none really give you hp gains..

for performance, most members here will recommend investing in an air scoop and drop in air filter (K&N or BMC)

^if you chose to go this route, pm members trinity autosport and/or nerweezy for the best pricing and customer service

LOL - I didn't even notice the Charcoal filter when I placed the K&N replacement in. I'll look for the charcoal filter and remove this evening.

I've been reading a little more and I'll remove the charcoal filter during lunch. This way I can enjoy it on the highway during my drive home this evening.
