My Ride: Bmw 530d 2004
Oh, I could have told earlier, I'm running Nokian Hakkapeliitta 5 at winter time. 225/50 R17 on BBS.
And they are great! But you said non studded. Hakkapeliitta 5 is always studded. But if you're driving in icy conditions, nothing beats the studs.
I don't think they wear out fast. Sure if you drive lot on dry/wet asphalt (not frozen), they will wear out sooner. But so does other winter tyres too.

I live 2 hrs from Chicago and you definitely need a good winter set up for this area of the country.
I bought a used set from someone who was turning in their lease on Ebay. I got a set of 138 style OEM 17in rims w/Continental snow tires already on them for $500. Not a bad deal. You should be able to find OEM rims in 17in size for fairly cheap on here, ebay or even in Roundel if you are a member of the BMWCCA (and if not, you should join!)

BTW stock tires are 245/40 18" not 35 profile.
Do your self and the car a favor and buy some new Nokian 245/40 18" non RF winter tires for your old rims.
For next summer get a nice 19" set.

I had the Dunlop WinterSport M3 on the 545 and they were great. I now have Blizzack LM-22's and they suck on my 335.. They were sold out of the Dunlops when I got the new set.

Thanks for the suggestion I am tempted to do so, since I do not know a lot about the tires, is their a significant disadvantage in going over to 245/40/18" over the 225/50/R17". Also where do I buy the Nokians from, I have made a few calls it , no one seems to have them.

I'm not familiar with that tire, but I think one of the Finnish or Norwegian members runs those. I doubt you need studs--those are pretty serious, and runflats suck IMHO.

Not a huge difference between the 17s or 18s. However, narrower tires perform better in snow, plus the 17s will also be cheaper. Not sure where to get Nokians.

Even as RF's they are really, really quiet and not hard at all.
This goes for 225/50 17".
