The Bridgestone Blizzaks are very good. As for rim options, do they spray a lot of salt on the roads where you are during winter? If they do, you want to stay away from wheels that have polished or chromed finishes. Go an check Tire Rack (www.tirerack.com). They have winter tire/wheel packages.

Might try e-Bay or Craigslist as a lot of guys pull the stock 17" style 138s a lot of e60s come with and unload them on the cheap--I did. It's a good way to get a good fitment, quality OEM wheel. Then put on some Blizzaks. I'm sure some of the guys in the colder climes will chime in with other tire recommendations.

It's usually not that extreme where I live, so I just put on some all-seasons. Everyone has their needs, and Chicago probably requires a switch. Welcome aboard.

Thanks Guys, I have heard of the Nokians 5 Hakkapeliita tire as a great winter tire, I was thinking about 225/50/17 non runflats and non studded. Thoughts !

I'm not familiar with that tire, but I think one of the Finnish or Norwegian members runs those. I doubt you need studs--those are pretty serious, and runflats suck IMHO.

Nokians have a great reputation, although from what I've heard they tend to wear quickly. If you can afford them, I'm sure they would be a great tire for you.

I have the Dunlop WinterSport M3 in 225/50/17 on BMW OEM wheels, and have had very good luck with them even with a rear wheel drive car in New England.

Dunlop Winter Sport M3. Had a set of M2's that I used for 6 winters. Never was stranded once. I always use BMW OEM 17" wheels for winter. Have not been able to bend one yet.

I had the 18" Blizzak LM-25's on my 530xi and they are hands down the best snow tires I have EVER put on a car. It was unreal. I called my E60 the Audi Eater, in the snow. They're a little soft and mushy on dry roads, so you might want to check out the Dunlop M3's too, but for pure snow traction and only the best, Blizzaks without question.

PS - I'm selling my brand new set, if anyone is interested. They're 245/40/18 Blizzak LM-25's. I need to upgrade to 19" snowies now, so I can't use these anymore.
