I used and was recommended the FSD Koni or a coilover set of another brand I forgot. Here is what I used and only paid $275 compared to $750 new. It was a sweet deal and they were only used for 6 months.
Front part #: 8741 1476Sport
Rear part #: 8240 1219Sport
BMW 04-07 5 series - E60 525i, 530i, 540i, 545i Sedan and Touring Excluding self leveling, EDC and Sport Suspension - Sport (Yellow)
Check here for proper fitment: http://www.koni-na.com/index.cfm
As far as ride quality? Its better than the stock shocks were! The car glides on the ground and laughs at turns. It feels like a different automobile. I was recommended to set the Koni's at 1/2 strength to preserve a smooth ride but still be sporty-feeling and its been great so far. I drove the car about 50 miles yesterday with the new setup and I like it 10x better than I did with the stock springs / shocks / struts.
The H&R Sport springs apparently drop the car 1.4" in the front and 1.3" in the rear if you're non-sport. If you already have sport suspension it'll drop you .5" all-around. Which means, this drop is lower than a stock sports BMW suspension by 1/2". It might be because these pics are taken on the same day they were installed and it hasn't completely settled yet.
But, just to show you how close the tire is to the top of the fender in the rear.... I hope it doesn't settle much more!!!!! Remember, the rims I have are M6 Off-set, so they sit out wider than a stock M5 would:
Attachment 58060
The gap is something like 3/4" only. The ONLY REASON I DON'T RUB IS BECAUSE OF THE KONI SHOCKS. If I chose to just install H&R springs and call it a day, my ride would be bouncy as hell and I would rub that fender every bump. The new sport shocks prevent rapid up & down movement on bumps and I can tell the difference.
