I went to pick up my 2004 545 that was retrofitted with an auxilary input today but was severely dissapointed.

The part was installed correctly from what i can tell. THe connection was placed below the rechargeable flashlight in the glove box. When i clicked on the IDrive, the "Aux" showed up in the entertainment section, next to CD. Everything seemed to be working fine.

The big test: I plugged in my IPod and turned to the Aux connection. The sound came out but it sucked. THe sound was barely audible and it only came out of right side only. I checked the fader and the balance to make sure it was balanced. I changed from Aux to FM and CD and sound came out of all four regions.

Perhaps my connection on my Ipod was bad. So then plugged in my Sirius PNP Satellite radio unit. The same result. The sound came out of only right side.

I brought out the service tech and he took a look at it. He seemed to be puzzled as well. I left the car at BMW of San Diego and they will try to find the problem.

My AUX In disappeared, and after it was reprogrammed it was in the menu, but no sound at all.
BMW Munich suggests a complete software update, what was done on my car and probably was faulty.
Wednesday I'll know more, since Wednesday my dealer is trying to solve the problem.

Before the install, the dealer reprogrammed the software with part of the Oxygen Sensor recall. I think this has the latest sofware. I don't know the version.

I just picked up my 545. They fixed the problem from yesterday with sound coming from the right side only. They said they hooked one of the wires incorrectly. Now sound is coming out of both right and left sides.

I tried my Sirius Radio PNP and my 1st Generation IPOD and both works fine. The sound quality is better than FM modulator but still not as good as a CD. I figured that was going to be the case before I installed it. At least I won?t have to fumble around with my reception which is a big plus.

As for sound quality, I found the aux connection doesn?t have the bass response I was hoping for. But the sound going through the FM modulator to be less clear, more muffled.

Big question: Is it worth $239 for this modification? I guess only time will tell. But it does give me flexibility that I was hoping for and a slightly better sound quality. I can play my daughter?s portable DVD player through it, my IPod, my Sirius radio and any other audio source.

Congrats on the install! I may have to take a holiday and head to SD for an install.

TO THE LA CREW:

Any word on LA dealers and a successful install?

If you are interested, BMW of San Diego's phone number is 858-560-5050.
Ask for Jack Daniels (his real name) in Service. He coordinated my install. The other service techs have been telling customers that this can not be done.

Do you know what the part number was for the aux input? The ones I ordered where back ordered, but waiting to see if it was the same as for the E39.

Getting installed 12/27.
