Just like the title states - even though I'm pretty sure it's not I thought I'd ask. Can we take an automatic and switch steering wheels out for an 08 wheel w/ paddle shifters and have any function with them? Would be a sweet mod if so......

Again I'm gonna fill the forum with uncertain answers.......BUT...... it depends on the car....It worked for the pre-LCI models (had someone fron another forum do it, with the "old" automatic and the M5 wheel with paddles) and it worked.

I don't know if the new transmission is any different (not the sport automatic, just the normal automatic), but as I said, it certainly works with the M5 wheel, I don't know if you can use the Facelift wheel with the 2-way paddles on each side....

If you hold on, I may find the link to the guy's garage somewhere but I can't promise...

Hold on, I'm still searching for that damn online garage It's a 2004 or 2005 530i with the automatic tranny that's quite modded (in a good way) and he made this conversion......I don't know more by heart, have to find him first......

Yup!

I upgraded to SMG Sport steering wheel w/ paddle shifter and uses member my530i kit to interface w/ the Steptronic auto.

Depending on your car built date if after Sep. 2005 you maybe able to use '08 steering wheel 'cuz sinced then the back of the steering wheel has different design.

It's this one....if you scrool down to Modifikationen, about in the middle there's " M5 Sportlenkrad incl. Schaltpaddles (Sportautomatik al a BMW-Freak)" and the first point mentions the "automatic gearbox" so....it works....just don't ask me how much that would cost.

Thanks Anyone know if it is possible to avoid replacing our "sport" wheel and retrofiting THAT wheel for shifters (then adding the retrofit cable)? Otherwise, purchasing an 08 or m5 wheel, a new airbag, and the retrofit cable gets pretty spendy!
