Armrest question

Hi all,
As I'm new to the 5 series world, please excuse the dumb questions.
What is that swivel thing in the armrest used for?
When you swivel it up, it reveals the storage space at the bottom of the armrest.
There's a storage compartment inside that swiveling component. Is that for a phone or something?
