I might regret saying this but here it goes....driving with fog lights is trying to get attention! Like you want to be noticed when you're driving..."look at me with all my lights...notice me...". The stock xenons on the e60 provide you with all the necessary lighting when driving so having your fogs on is an extra step at getting attention! Unecessary and not cool for oncoming traffic or those in front of you. I hate being followed by someone with an artillery of lights, they cause my auto dimming mirrors to go damn near black where all I see is dim light dots behind me...it's almost like driving with your high beams....not cool!
Having said that....whatever floats your boat...I'm not a fog light hater! Just find it pointless...unless you're driving through some really bad rain or fog where you want other drivers to see you that much

^^^ No need for regret, it is partially true, when driving a 5 series you usually are not starved for attention - the exterior of my car is stock except for wheels and spoilers and it still gets attention, so no need for the fogs to be on. I do drive with fogs on sometimes in the mornings because it IS foggy near my work (those that take the 405 S early can attest, which is why in some of my earlier pics they were on as the sun broke through).
Basically, you are right, no real need for them when no fog

There's no much fog where I live so on my 545, I converted my fogs to HID driving lights. That way I can shine the whole damn road for all the motorists near me. It's a public service.
