Is this laser shifter effective and worth the expense or should I just stick with my trusty Valentine 1 by itself? This laser shifter is approximately $860 installed. Any experience or comments on this?

Yea I have the sr7 + the zr3. keep in mind that its only good if they use laser in your local or surrounding municipality. I've been lasered like 3 time outside of NYC and I plan to get this same system on my next car. It is IMO the pound for pound the best protection available on the market today.

I have the zr3. It was about $400 installed for just the laser shifter. Works great. I have a V1 for radar detection which IMO is the best available but does not jam anything.

How does the laser shifter work? Would a cop know if the laser shifter was in your car-that is, would his laser
behave erractically in a way that would tip him off?
And, are they legal in Massachusetts?

does anyone in California have one of these installed? I think laser jammers are illegal in California. Will a cop be able to tell if you have a jammer if he points his gun at you and can he give you a ticket for having one? I'm really looking into this but i dont' want to get it if it can be obvious to a cop that you have one.

My system on my SUV is hidden pretty good. So if the cop is not familiar with laser, he probably will not find it. Also the system can be configured for detection only, so the legality of it is grey.
However, laser is a tricky device. Due to my industry affiliation, I was talking with an engineer on the other side of the fence, who makes the laser devices for law enforcement. According to him, thier systems are pretty smart to the point that they can detect a jam. Plus, the amount of pulses they are hitting you with, they can supposidly filter out jammed ones as well as notify the user of a jammed signal. Also, they have the capability to put out a stealth mode that will confuse the jammer.
IMO and I am not an expert, just sharing the info I have learned, this technology sequence keeps flip flopping. Older laser meters may not have this same technology and you can beat them. Newer ones may or may not be beaten.
I am pretty sure you can send in your Escort or Bell controller unit for s/w updates, so this is probably a thing to do every year as I am sure the detector companies will keep beating the system.
Like I said, I have not encountered any laser systems on the road. Although they are more accurate for pin pointing a car, they are also very expensive and take a lot more skill to use - the cop has to point them like a gun. Then what, they have to jump back in thier car quick to catch you?
It seems to me out here, they can catch as many people as they want, just with radar and it is simple, so I am hoping the use of laser does not become wide spread. According to most of the industry people, there are only about 3% laser units in the market as compared to radar.
On another note, I am very happy with my radar detection capability of the Bell unit. It seems to be better than a dash mounted unit. and I like having both integrated into one system.

As far as legality in Massachusetts, I've had my two devices installed by a very reputable and well known after-market dealer in the Boston area. I'm assuming that they aren't in the business of marketing and installing illegal devices.
