550isport - you are down to 2 of 3 of the best brands in radar detectors (you may want to consider Beltronics also). And don?t ignore the really good answers from your friends here in the blog. Let me add some thoughts:

1) All 3 brands mentioned, Beltronics, Escort, and Valentine, see all the guns w/enough range to help you react in time to take preventative measures and not get stopped. Due to the extreme range all of these detectors provide, most instant-on threats will be detected when another driver ahead of you is targeted. Of course if there is absolutely no traffic then there is no way to counter the instant-on radar threat. Radar performance is not the only criteria with modern detector technology though ? in fact, we?re just getting started.

2) Also consider the "dead in their sites laser gun" attack. Laser can be deadly due to the technology being a) nearly instantaneous and b) single target capable which means when he sights and fires the laser, if you are the target, you are the only one caught and it is deadly accurate. Laser is also becoming much more commonplace as the technology gets less expensive. Considering this very important criteria, of the 3 top brands, only Escort and Bel have add-on systems that completely disarm the laser gun and prevent it from targeting and tracking you for purposes of being stopped. Both the Escort and the Bel systems are thorough in their operation and relatively easy to add on once you have purchased their windshield mount detectors. You don't have to buy all the pieces immediately but instead you can always add the laser 'shifters'/'blockers' when you're ready. Also the Escort and Beltronics models integrate seemlessly with their affordable laser 'shifting'/'blocking' systems. The V1 simply does not have this all-in-one upgrade option. Laser shifting/blocking is not federally regulated as radar jamming is, but some municipalities have regulated any technology that thwarts law enforcement measuring vehicle speed so you may want to check your local laws if you are interest in laser shifting. The Escort and Bel solutions have integrated an easy method to quickly disable the laser shifting so that a measurement cn be obtained and not draw unwanted suspicion. The system will auto turn itself back on after a minute so that you don't forget to re-activate it.

3) Fast becoming the most important criteria, you need to make yourself aware of the single greatest increasing threat of being cited today - the rapid placement of red light and speed cameras being deployed all across North America. Thousands are already active with more being installed every single day. Only Escort (the Passport 9500ix, and 9500ci) and Bel (Bel Pro GX65) have detectors that are fully prepared to alert you to these threats accurately and only Escort and Bel offer you web ready detectors for instant, easy downloadable updates.

4) The 9500ci is the ultimate GPS enabled totally undetectable radar detector+laser shifting all-in-one solution. It's best in class radar detection combined with the auto-Truelock GPS ability give the longest detection range while also drastically cutting down on the false positives when around town plus it contains the complete North American database of verified red light and speed cameras. The components are extremely well-built and are very discrete inside the vehicle, nothing about it seems "cheap". The installation is very well documented if you are a do-it-yourselfer and everything is clearly labeled. If you are on the fence about doing the installation yourself, contact Escort I'm sure that they will provide you with documentation about what the job involves prior to purchase. I'm not sure if I would recommend it on a leased car but it is truly an elegant all-in-one solution.

The best part is that all of these companies offer 30 day trial periods on their windshield mounted detectors (I doubt it on the installed solutions). Try each and see which has the features that you like best.

heh, you know your shit. I am getting the Escort 9500ci. I just got a red light ticket in the mail for not fully stopping on a right turn. Fking bullshit. $100 Fine. I'll be damned if I donate more of my hard-earned money to my welfare ass state of Illinois that can't even fix a bloody pothole.

i had the escort (before someone broke my passenger window and stole it) and loved it. I havent owned a V1 but it always seems the escort and V1 are the best ones to get and your really wont be disappointed with either.

I personally have the V1 and it saved me lots of times, BUT just this Saturday 2/7/2009 an officer was lasering me on Jamboree in Irvine, CA and he got me. The V1 went crazy and I tried to slow down, but he got me going 77 on a 60. He was very nice and explained that there is a speed trap there for the next month

Other than that the V1 works great

That's the one I have. IT works great and gets the job done. It's nice having the GPS function which has all the red-light camera spots preloaded into the unit.

Just turn off all the bands except KA and Laser..... or if you decide to leave K on, you can at least mark (with the gps function) where the false alarm is when your driving by it, so it never goes off next time you drive by.

I have not seen a cop with a laser gun in a looooooong time.

Cops here in LA sits on corner of streets or sometimes parked on the side of the streets waiting for something to happen, it's like they're on a doughnut break but they're not and it's like they're there to get paid to just sit and watch and wait for someone to make a mistake/moving violation then grab the opportunity to site these innocent drivers that makes these mistakes unintentionally instead of driving or do their rounds and hoping to catch criminals or save someone that really needs help. MFCs!!!!

did I say too much, sorry!

V1 hands down. In fact, the bogey counter saved my arse just tonight. In a spot where I typically detect 2 radar signals, the V1 displayed a "3" tonight. Sure enough, John Q. Law was gunning under the guise of the junk K-band. I can't say enough about the capabilities of this detector, and I don't believe any other current detector would have saved me in such a scenario.
